Anti-cancer drug begins human trials

An anti-cancer drug developed by a UB faculty researcher and Kinex Pharmaceuticals has begun clinical testing with patients. The drug was created from the work of David Hangauer, UB associate professor of chemistry, who developed a compound that targets a protein linked to the survival of cancer cells. “We have the first success to come from this approach,” said Hangauer, who also serves as Kinex senior vice president of research and development. “Our drug compound has been shown to be active against all cancers.” Read more.

UB professor’s mentoring recognized by White House

George C. Lee, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the University at Buffalo Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, was one of 11 individuals honored by the White House with a 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. The award, administered by the National Science Foundation, honors those committed to mentoring students and boosting the participation of minorities, women and disabled students in science, mathematics and engineering. Engineering students aim to reduce school-bus emissions

Environmentally conscious undergraduates from the University at Buffalo are partnering with Erie County on a program that aims to reduce diesel emissions in school buses. The Erie County Clean School Bus Initiative plans to use data collected by members of the UB chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World to educate school administrators, faculty, parents and students about the issue while convincing them of the need for equipment that would decrease the stream of harmful fumes.
