Rachel Bernstein

"Every college student should study abroad - in Africa, Asia, Europe, wherever in the world you want to go." Rachel Bernstein spent a semester studying in Salamanca, Spain, where she took 16 credit hours of Spanish language and cultural studies. She arrived in Spain with what she says was a "beginning level" command of the language, lived with a family that spoke only Spanish, and took courses taught only in Spanish with a student body from all over the world whose only common language was Spanish. Now her Spanish is well beyond that beginning level.

Community outreach is woven through Rachels life. Shes a veteran of Habitat for Humanity, volunteers for the organization 10,000 Villages, and she volunteered in an after-school program when she was studying in Spain. "My idea for the future is to establish and run a community service center in a university setting that would bring members of the community to the campus and bring university students to the community."

The Intercultural & Diversity Center is dedicated to celebrating the universitys culturally-rich and inclusive learning environment. Through a variety of cultural awareness programs and leadership activities, the center celebrates UBs diversity and promotes the importance of intercultural communication. Study Abroad

UB sponsors full-credit study abroad programs in more than thirty countries. These programs offer a full range of language, academic, and cultural opportunities so you can experience another country while you learn. Programs are available for the full academic year, for single semesters, and during the summer. And if youd like to study in a location not offered by UB, you can take advantage of the nearly 300 programs offered by other State University of New York campuses.
